Today was such a gorgeous day: I sat outside in a Starbucks early in the morning to watch people go by. It is an inexpensive treat but I find watching people in the street in early fall very soothing and relaxing, in a melancholic kind of way. They throw gracefully their gigantic arms around themselves like ballerinas in a desperate attempt to keep their balance. They proudly defy the laws of physics probably conscious that if they’d collapse on their way to work they could easily suffer a slow death from suffocation on the sidewalk like a turtle on its back. If you get close enough to look into their eyes you can feel their ache and hear their loud breathing often punctuated by a loud snort or gasp. They are the modern true rebels who crossed the frontier where physical appearance is not important anymore, and indulged themselves in soda drinking and binge eating as a “modus vivendi”. Just thinking of how they manage to find their clothes open infinite possibilities and points to the weaknesses of the American civilization. Watching these large herds of majestic obese women lumbering towards DC downtown is both humbling and fascinating. Yet, one must be very cautious in staring discreetly; one must avoid confrontation as they would crush you in no time.
