Yeah the blog might be late today but then I also have an awesome excuse: I basically slammed a flying scot, with Drew W. and Kevin D. on board, in Reagan National airport infrastructure mobilizing as much as three police boats (a swamp boat, a motorboat and a jetski), as many vehicles and threatening to disturb air traffic.
It started like a really good, albeit windy, day, we sailed in the Bell Haven Marina for like 45 minutes and after we got kicked out because of a storm I got this really cool idea of renting one in the Washington Marina. After a little while of really cool sailing (let’s say 10 minutes), I hit a sandbar, lost control of the boat which went to slam into the landing lights dock of the airport tearing apart both of our sails in a horrible noise. The wire got entangled in the structure immobilizing our ship. My first comment after the accident was “at least I don’t have to worry about docking the thing anymore”.
After that, it’s just your usual embarrassing story. The coast guars and police began to gather by the airport and on land, while we were waiting in the boat stuck in shallow waters with a pretty high wind. As no boat could get close to us, we were stuck there for something like 50 minutes with huge planes landing on our heads every 5 minutes. We were worried that the mat was going to collapse because of the crazy tension in the wires. When we were finally got rescued, I did not really discuss the bill that was presented to me by a furious Marina manager. If you see me tonight, I am on a serious mission to get wasted.
It might sound lovely but it was a little painful mostly because, even if I look slim enough on the accident pictures, I never looked that bald. Also I am under the impression that the Washington Marina won’t let me rent boats and that Kevin D. will hesitate to let me borrow his car after this terrible quiproquo.

Do you see what happens when the Captain of the Lous is missing?

here are some more tidbits fhc neglected to mention:
1. there were fbi, homeland security, airport security agents involved, but thankfully there were no immigration officials called to the scene.
2. the most terrifying part was when the mast slammed into the piling. i feared capsizing and then drowning. we discovered later, as our rescuers casually strolled towards us, that we were in 2 feet deep water. that's when i began considering taking off my lifejacket.
3. fhc wept uncontrollably not during or after the impending accident, but later on the shore when he came to the realization that his sailing reputation was ruined and that he would have to take up a new sport, such as golf, since surely he will be black-listed from all nearby marinas as a "boat killer."
4. i called ll from the boat to sound a general SOS. ll answered with immoderate indifference and said our trip sounded like fun but that he had to run to happy hour and that we'd catch up later.
5. there were a couple of cute twinks who initially readied our boat and helped us aboard. drew w. and i managed to see all the way up the shorts of one of them, revealing a decent sized, albiet, very young package.
all this being said, i still place my good faith in fhc's effortless nautical skills. i'm sure even lance armstrong wrecked a few bikes in his days and i've burned down an oboe or two. what's most surprizing is that even though the deftness of his sailing ability far surpasses his scary retarded driving "ability" he was still able to wreck a boat sooner than a zip-car. congratulations, fhc!

Well, you had your true baptism and got the essentials of sailing school. Respect the elements! Respect the ocenn (even if it is a bay or river) and respect the sky. When you defy them, you may get in serious trouble... Wished I was in DC to offer you sympathy

don't worry, fhc: we all expected something like this to happen sooner or later. the french haven't exactly been known for their seafaring derry-do since sometime before 1805, if i remember correctly.
i'm just thankful no one was killed or seriously injured.
