Today Fagat (the old one, not the new fresher one) wrote to us a very empathetic yet insolent “I haven't spoken English in two days and I'm finding it a bit maddening. I don't know how you've done it for the 17 years you've been in the United States”. That’s funny because I actually went to American University yesterday on my way back from the Billy Goat Trail with my dear friend Fred to walk around campus. It reminded me of when I arrived in the US six years ago on August 16, 2000 (at the end of what will be remembered as the crazy pre-September 11 era of free sex, reckless freedom and endless opportunities) and only talked to squirrels for four days while sleeping directly on my mattress because I did not have any sheet or a cover. I also got to show my friend the residence in which I had my first gay experience (Hughes 509 at American). 2001 was the year everything changed in my life and strangely enough I have not even one picture left of that year and almost no friendship…probably because I spent most of it either in bed or studying. This was an exhilarating time of mental liberation which I wish I could re-experience and maybe the only time in my life were I was more excited than scared. My biggest regret is that I was not able to spend my undergraduate years in an American College as I believe this is the best place for one to become oneself (American Colleges are wasted on American kids if you want my opinion) but still I am grateful for that all too quick year of 2000/2001 Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day and the freshmen looked gorgeous on the quad and I thought that after all I should try spending more time at my alma matter. Life on campus in the US just always gets better.
Somehow I don't believe that FHC pre-Sept. 11 would have spent any time "studying."
